Frequently Asked Questions

AAA Team FAQs

How are AAA Teams Formed?
AAA Teams are formed: 1) By qualified coaches who invite players onto a team or 2) by St. Croix Hockey placement of players onto Teams following Open Evaluations.

How are Open Evaluations Conducted?
Players attending our Open Evaluations sessions will be run through a series of on-ice skating, puckhandling and shooting drills. Coaches and/or a St. Croix Hockey representative will be on hand to evaluate players. If time permits, players may be asked to scrimmage (no-check) as part of the evaluation.

What Happens following the Open Evaluation?
After Open Evaluations, coaches and/or a St. Croix Hockey representative will contact you via telephone and/or email within 5 - 10 days regarding placement of your son/daughter on a team.

What Happens if I am not assigned to a Team?
Not all players can be offered Roster spots on Teams. For Players attending Open Evaluation Sessions and not assigned to a Team, there are two options: 1) Inquire with St. Croix Hockey as to whether there are openings for "Practice-Only" players on teams; or 2) Request to be on a waiting list should openings occur due to player cancellations or formation of additional Team(s).

Are Your Coaches Qualified?
All St. Croix Hockey Coaches are qualified - for more information on our coaching qualifications CLICK HERE to be re-directed to our Coaches Page.

Why So Many Practices - Doesn't AAA Hockey have more Games / Tourneys?
St. Croix AAA Hockey adheres to the USA Hockey philosophy that off-season development of core hockey skills is more dependent on training (or practice) rather than playing games. Unlike some AAA programs, St. Croix AAA Hockey ensures teams start with a schedule which favors practices to games to support proper skill development. Teams have the option to utilize some of their practice ice for specialized training and/or for additional games if desired.

Can I Choose which team my Son/Daughter plays on?
Most individuls are assigned to teams based on availability, however every effort is made to place players on teams within similar geographic areas / associations. If there is a particular team your son/daughter is interested in, please call a head coach directly to inquire if there are openings on a particular team.

Can my Son / Daughter Play only in the Spring or only Fall?
The St. Croix AAA Hockey program includes both the Spring and Fall Sessions. No "Spring-Only" players are allowed. However, in certain instances "Fall-Only" players can be placed onto teams pending available roster spots after July 1st, and only at the discretion of a head coach. For information on this, contact St. Croix Hockey.

Are Game Jerseys Optional?
No - Game Jerseys are Required for All Rostered Players. However, players do have the following options in acquiring a Game Jersey: 1) Re-Use last year's Jersey (if you are a returning player); 2) Purchase a NEW Game Jersey when Registering; or 3) Purchase a Game-Worn Jersey (if available) at a Discounted Rate - for more information on this CLICK HERE.
